The Macbook Air is still the greatest

The Macbook Air is still the greatest

Close to the week of an Apple event where we hope for new hardware across the board I write this on my mid-2012 Macbook Air, so yes I’m in the market for something new. But what do I get? There are promises of new Macbook Pro’s, maybe Airs coming soon, probably not at the iPhone event on September the 7th but soon. So what do I go for?

So I’m thinking about a new laptop. I do like the idea of the Macbook Pro but it may be a little overkill for me. I have a 5K iMac on which I do the bulk of my ‘weighty’ work. I have the 11” Macbook Air and for the past 4 years it’s served me like a trooper. It’s the machine I write on, the machine I carry about and the machine that I do all my podcasts on. So for the price and the size I don’t think that there is anything that compares.

Of course there’s the 2nd gen Macbook (that thin one with the odd keyboard). It’s cute, it has a retina display and I do love the look of it but I begrudge the outlay for something that I throw in my backpack and just need to surf the net and blog on.

Since the announcement of the Air back in 2008 companies all over the world have been trying to mimic its charms but the problem is that they don’t meet the mark. Don’t get me wrong, the competitors are Windows machines and I have not beef with them, I’m actually rather fond of Windows but I have spent the last 4 years minus my media centre to move solely to Mac and it has served me well.

Fair enough the original Air only had one USB port and was underpowered but it has come a long way.

So what do I do? This is my question to you. I adore the 11” form factor of the Air. There has been talk that with the release of the shiny new Macbook that the Air was going away but recent rumblings say that it may get a boost so it may stay with us which makes me happy.

As an entry laptop to Apple the Air is perfect. Yes, it doesn’t have the retina screen and the speed of the Pro’s but it overshadows the Macbook which is struggles with its Core M Processor.

The upshot of this rant is that after growing up with technology over the last 40 years the 11” Air is the single most satisfying piece of tech I have ever owned. I am glad that it is still running but fear when it doesn’t and I will inevitably have to make ‘that decision’, I hope that Apple doesn’t let me down.

The model I own is the one with only 64GB of storage but I find this ample since I moved to the cloud, of course I’d like more but it’s not a deal-breaker.

So what is a man to do? All you hardcore Apple fans, is there a place in your heart for the Air or is it time for it to disappear into the mists of time?

It will be really interesting to see what comes in the next couple of months.
