Motorola is developing a technology called eFuse that prevents modders from loading custom ROMs onto their phones. The eFuse chip checks each file for a secret security code. If it detects an unauthorized file, eFuse shuts down the processor.
The PR guy behind Motorola's YouTube channel recently told their potential customers that if they want to use custom ROMs, then they should buy elsewhere. This comment ignited fury and a slew of people to respond that they will move over to HTC and Samsung. Motorola has since removed the comment and apologized for the remark, but the damage is done.
Why these manufacturers insist on locking down our phones is dubious. It doesn't cost them anything or hurt them by allowing modders to load custom ROMs onto the hardware. The investment of time and technology into lockdown efforts is a waste of resources and hurts customer relations.
You win, Motorola. I will buy elsewhere.
