The best retro games for iOS

The best retro games for iOS

As a child growing up during the birth and bloom of the home computing and gaming revolution it still completely dumbfounds me that we can now play classic games on our phones. So many developers have now delivered these retro titles to our mobile devices and here are a few of my faves that I have bought over the years.

Speedball 2 Evolution

Back in the day I loved playing this Bitmap Brothers classic on my Amiga. I was obsessed with my team and my Speedball career.

Everything about this mobile adaptation screams retro. They have kept every detail from the original so much it gives me chills.

You may wonder how the controls transfer to iOS but they've actually done a fab job. There are two modes. You can either move the using the accelerometer or with an onscreen joystick which you can place anywhere on the screen for convenience.

The classic match gameplay is there as well as the opportunity to upgrade and manage our team. So if you remember and love this, you will love it all over again.

R-Type

I used to love this game on all formats but my fave was on the Super Nintendo. As you may well remember R-Type is a side-scrolling shooter where you need to devastate the oncoming alien invasion.

You can advance aided via the means of upgrades from the various drones flying around which if shot will give you a power globe that over time adds more destruction to your arsenal. And if you're really clever you can detach it for long range attacks or connect it behind you for the ultimate protection.

This works just as well as it did back in the day and has nostalgia in spades.

Sonic the Hedgehog

When the Sega Megadrive/Genesis arrived they needed a rival to take on Mario and Nintendo and they had a strong response in Sonic the Hedgehog.

If you think about the look and gameplay of Sonic back in the day it still blows your mind as to its exhilaration and speed. And now you can play it on your phone. To be honest it was a pretty simple port. Sonic only really needs a couple of controls and these adapt to mobile really well.

It looks even more stunning on a mobile device and takes me back to my Sega Game Gear days which were far from efficient.

Plus. Buy it on your phone and play it on your Apple TV.

Doom

Doom changed the world. Without it there would be no Quake, no Unreal and certainly no Call of Duty.

But this is just a gem. It makes all of those memories flood back. And even though compared to titles that came later made Doom look a bit clunky it is still a joy to play, especially on your phone.

Any device is measured by the fact if it can run Doom and the most recent is Doom in the new Macbook Pro Touchbar.

Are there any other retro games you've enjoyed on mobile? Or are there any that you'd like ported to the platform.
