QUESTIONS
1. Hello Ewan, This is Brett, (I had bought a BagelTech Foto Shirt, and asked you questions about lenses and Crop Sensor for the NEX 5N, about 6 months ago). So, after 6 months of not being happy with the image quality of my photos with the NEX 5N, ( even with other lenses (sigma 30mm f1.4) I decided the only way to know once and for all if i'm a crap photographer, or just a bad judge of equipment, I flogged the NEX on ebay, and bought a used 2007 Cannon 5D mark 1 off of Craigslist. I lucked out, and the camera is in perfect condition. This did answer my self doubt, because matched with the Nifty Fifty 1.0, the photos look remarkably better than the NEX 5N. My faith is restored. Now the bad News. As the camera is 5 years old, and the Shutter has a finite life expectancy, I realize (i've been averaging 300 clicks a week, with about 10 decent photos to show for it ) that within the next year, I am going to have to replace the shutter. Questions- 1. other than sending it back to Canon, whom im not sure I trust to give me the straight dope (They're in the Business buisness, not the Friends business), Is there a shop, or service that could give me a shutter actuation count for my 5D mark 1 ? (all of the online programs can not do the mark 1)
2. can you give me a concise work flow list for shooting ie First set iso, Then F stop, Then shutter speed, etc). This would cut down on the amount of wasted shots before I realized the camera wasn't turned on or whatever.
3. my second lens purchased was a Sigma 70 - 300 f4-5.6 (i was inspired by the lady across the street who walks around without Clothes or Shades , jus kiddn) the sigma is reputed to be sharp at 200mm, but soft at 300. Do you think I will get sharper photos, shooting at 200mm and cropping, or at 300 and photo shop sharpening? I want to Thank you, and the rest of the Photo Show crew, for being my personal Image Therapists. Yours SincBeerly, Brett.
Ps,
On last weeks photo show, you mentioned Scott Kelby Books as some of your favorites. you described how he works in a project style rather than jsut saying this is how you do this, this is how you do that. so on your recomendation, I bought his Adobe CS 4 book (as I have CS4). It's great, easy to follow. Most of the reason I trust your recommendations is, Im Dyslexic, I Play guitar & I <3 Beer. Hugs not Drugs, Brett 2.
4. Hi all, you guys are the best! I love the show. I have a canon 7d and have a 50mm 1.8 plus the 15-85mm. I am looking for some extra reach and am torn between the Tamron 70-300 with IS or the Canon 70-200L ( non IS). these would be for people photography etc and not sports I know that you have said that for zooms up to 300mm the last quarter turn is useless, would this also be the case for the Canon lens? Help! Lee from Bromgrove.
