Ejecting a DVD from a Mac device

Ejecting a DVD from a Mac device
4 Aug 14

Apparently it happens to us all sometimes. Your Mac device decides it's having a very bad day and will take it out on you by refusing to give you your DVD back.

Today it was my turn so I thought I'd quickly post the recommended fixes as provided by Apple, alongside the actual fix that worked for me. Now I'm not saying the Apple ones won't work - not at all. It's just that they didn't work for me on this occasion and I've read posts from people where those fixes actually did the job.

So please see below and if you find yourself in that same situation, take your pick and let us know if they worked/didn't work/if you have any other fixes from your own personal experiences.

Apple Recommended Fixes

1. Restart the computer and after the chime, press and hold down the left mouse button until the disk ejects.

2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.

3. Click on the Eject button in your menubar.

4. Press COMMAND-E

5. If none of the above work, try this. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:

/usr/bin/drutil eject

If this fails, then try this. Boot the Computer into Single User Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

None of these worked for me, however I rebooted the computer whilst holding the Option key down, waited for the boot options to appear and then pressed the Eject key on the keyboard. Bingo, my Mac was clearly happy with this input and thanked me by opening wide and giving me my DVD back.

Such fickle things these machines.
