The iKlip Grip

The iKlip Grip

This is a product which feels nice in the hand and the construction is clearly robust.

At first the iklip looked like a chore to assemble and disassemble but the instructions are clear and simple to follow. After a few goes assembly becomes really easy with all the detachable parts screwing together simply.

iklipgrip_tripod_ip_micfield_video_vertThe best thing about the iklip is its size, with it the telescopic tube giving around an extra 50cm in reach allowing you to get high above the crowds and get the footage you want without having to crane your neck.

When fully collapsed it easily fits in an averagely sized handbag or rucksack Its very light and well made and despite the lightness is still pretty sturdy.

Before opening the box, my biggest concern was with the phone grip system and whether it would offer a tight enough fit so I could move around without risk of my phone falling out. I was surprised at how effective the grip was, it held my iPhone 5 really tightly, offering no movement when smoothly panning. Even when I moved jerkily with the iklip, my phone still looked and made me feel like it was secure.

There were however two issues I had with the iklip grip, the first being the tripods stability. On its own or on the smaller uses of the telescopic tube it worked fine but when fully extended it wasn't the same. When first placing it indoors I noticed it wobbled slightly as I put it down, which was no issue as it soon settled and worked fine but after seeing this I wouldn't use it outside on a windy day or in an area were it may be knocked as I felt it would fall easily. I would also consider only using it on built or level surfaces as they offer the greatest stability for it. This issue also would make me reluctant to use a camera on the iklip as the added weight would perhaps increase the instability

iklipgrip_tripod_ip_video_horiz_BThe bluetooth shutter remote control worked really well, with my phone detecting it straight away. it also did exactly what I wanted it to do up to a 10m distance.

The final point is its price, this model is quite pricey, the cheapest I could find was £42, with cheaper alternatives readily available. However the product is well built and works well with a smartphone which the cheaper alternatives may not offer.

Overall it is a great product and does exactly what it says, I wouldn't use it as a tripod on the greatest extension but all the other uses worked well. I would definitely recommend this product even with the higher price as it keeps your phone secure and safe which cheaper alternatives may not.

Pro’s

  • easy to use
  • the extension allows for new angles of footage
  • bluetooth shutter was easy to use and worked well
  • the grip worked well and kept my phone secure

Con’s

  • tripod stability makes it unsuitable for uneven surfaces such as grass
  • its expensive for a 'selfie stick' but the Bluetooth trigger eases my cost concerns significantly.
  • I have an innate mistrust of 'Friction Grip' Ball head joints even though this one worked well out of the box

Overall

Yeah buy it! Its pretty neat and whilst not cheap is definitely worth the money
