With all their current woes the one thing that does impress me about Microsoft is the fact that they do actually acknowledge that there’s competition out there and aren’t afraid to develop apps for their direct competition. Take PhotoSynth and SmartGlass for example.
The latest addition to this family is something that’s really going to help me out and that’s their new Remote Desktop app.
For years I’ve been looking for a decent solution that will allow me to connect to my Windows PC’s and I've tried a few but up until now each one has been lacking in some respect but Microsoft’s offering is pretty decent.
The configuration is just as easy as apps you’ve probably tried before and once you’re in it’s pretty easy to use. On the iPhone obviously you’re going to have to be zooming in to get to those piddly touch points if you’re a Windows 7 user but Windows 8 lends itself to the app nicely with the Metro interface. On the other hand the experience on the iPad is fantastic and I’ve found it a dream to use to connect back to my desktop PC at work when I’m out and about.
Another decent feature is the keyboard especially since developers now have access to it in iOS 7. As well the usual QWERTY you can bring up shortcut keys, all the function keys and the glorious Windows button. You can also long press on the screen to bring up the ever useful right mouse click.
All in all if you’re looking for a free remote solution then this really holds it’s own. And if you’re in the enterprise IT market this can open up a number of possibilities especially until Microsoft unveil a decent Office solution for touch.
You can even enable all of your favourite grating Windows sounds too just to get you in the mood.
You can get it for iOS in the App Store and there is also an Android version on Google Play.
