Yes an interesting issue arose this week with an update to Ewen's iPad. If you have a SIM enabled iPad, once you decide to use it for a coffee table device at home, Apple will not allow it to be activated without an active SIM inside it. This and all the weeks Apple News from the usual sparkling crew.
