Carrie Fisher: My Princess

Carrie Fisher: My Princess

As I write this post the opening sequence from a 'New Hope' is blaring through my sound system. As I asked my wife 'can I watch Star Wars' she didn't blink an eyelid and said 'yes of course' as she knows how much it means to me and that I want to say goodbye to someone who has been a big part of my life, and to me a real princess.

Yesterday we lost Carrie Fisher, days after she suffered a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles promoting her book 'The Princess Diarist'.

As a child born in the mid-1970's Princess Leia was my first true crush. A strong woman with strong values who could kick some ass and maybe the standard that I hold all women to today in that they are more emotional, braver and stronger than any of us men would ever dream to be.

She was truly beautiful, not just in Star Wars but subsequent appearances in so many iconic movies. Her mind even though troubled gave us a window into the true person she was. In 1987 she wrote her semi-autobiographical novel 'Postcards from the Edge' which was made into a major movie in 1990 starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine which documented her upbringing and revealed why she was who she was.

For years she was an advocate of mental health and through her honesty and generosity she did so much to raise awareness of the disease something in my personal situation I was so thankful for.

2016 is a year a lot of us would like to forget but with those who have left us no bigger hole has been left like Carrie. Although it was inevitable it still fills my heart with sorrow.

If you're a geek I know she's your princess too and I thought it wrong that BTN laid quiet to her passing which is why I write this post. I will truly miss her and her appearance in Star Wars Episode 8 later in 2017 will be all the more sad.

Sleep well my princess. With love, I miss you.
