So yesterday was my Christmas Day. I have been counting down to Rogue One like a giggly schoolboy and I've finally opened my pressies. I just thought I would share some of the breakdown but at no point giving away any plot. This is just analysis of how it made me feel.
As you may well know I'm a bit of a Star Wars nut with my allegiance of course to the original trilogy so the thought of a spinoff accommodating the same timeline as my favourite space opera made me giddy with anticipation.
You basically know the story as it's outlined in A New Hope but if you don't know my lips are tightly sealed.
Whether you're a fan or not this movie is visually stunning. It has the retro look of the originals with the benefit of 21st century CGI. Everyone is still donning their 70's haircuts and fashion styles. The computers, sets and graphics have not been tampered with in any way. It makes you feel right at home. I spent the entire movie experiencing goosebumps as every vehicle, Stormtrooper and mention of the force came into play.
There was a worry that a spinoff of the Star Wars universe would not hold up to what came before and in that I DO NOT include the prequels but this is a joy. The story is well written and the cast is so well picked and diverse that you cannot help but feel for their cause.
Of course there are references to A New Hope, you'd never get away from that but it's done tastefully and minimally and it ties in perfectly. But the main thing is just the overall spectacle. I know that my views are that of a hard core fan but I would challenge anyone who wouldn't take something positive from this movie.
There is confirmation that other spinoffs are on the way such as the Han Solo origin movie and if this is anything to go by it's a great start. Disney have been sympathetic to the brand and have not just churned out something as part of the Mickey Mouse money making machine.
I watched it in 3D which I don't normally do as it puts me off but as it was a universe that I know and love it was quite effective but I will be watch it again in 2D to catch up on the things that I am sure that I missed as I did with The Force Awakens.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in cinemas now.
