One my favourite games back in the day in the arcade and eventually at home was the Konami classic Parodius. Now I'm not sure what they were smoking when they developed this game but it's f***ing trippy but one hell of a laugh.

It's a side scrolling shooter and you can play as one of 4 characters. Here comes the trippy-ness. You can choose from 'Vic Viper' which is a spaceship from a previous Konami release 'Gradius'. You then have 'Octopus' which is exactly what it says, a flying octopus. Then you have my fave, 'Twinbee' which is a boxing glove wielding rocket ship. And finally 'Pentarou' a penguin with attitude. You can see where this is going.

So like I say it's a side scrolling shooter where you need to decimate the oncoming enemy that come in a variety of forms such as fish, birds, crabs, bees and chickens, the list goes on and on.

Throughout the game you can collect power-ups that give you various abilities in then same way as the power-ups worked in 'R-Type' such as rear cannons, missiles and lasers. You can also choose whether to have the upgrades applied automatically or manually.

It's such a joy to look at. So colourful and vibrant. But the enemies are really the stars of the show especially the end of level bosses which consist of pirate ship made out of a cat, a hundred foot lap dancer, a giant American eagle complete with stars and stripes top hat, a gang of killer lips, a sumo-pig, a naked woman in a toga and it just gets even weirder after that.

It's such a great pick up and play game and it is actually quite hardcore in the amount of enemies sent your way. The music for its time is lovely. This is an 8-bit adventure if you never got to play it you really need to get your hand on this. You won't believe what you're seeing.

There are various incarnations of the original but nothing trumps 'Sexy Parodius' but it's probably NSFW.
