That’s it. I’m not upgrading my phone!

Yes you heard me right. I have just come to the end of my 2 year iPhone 6 contract so now I can get the new and shiny, but I’m not going to. This iPhone 6 is still an awesome handset. I’m not a photographer, I’m no real mobile power user and this device does everything that I need it to do as well as it would on the newer iPhone 7’s or equivalent Android devices. My phone is just my little window into the world. I like to peek in from time to time to see what y’all up to and what's going on in the world.

Last month I invested in the Apple Watch Series 1 which I have fallen head over heels in love with. It is now the primary interface into my phone, I hardly ever take the 6 out of my pocket so why would the bulge in my pocket need to be a brand new handset the would cost me a fortune?

I am, however a power user when it comes to my profession which is spread across Mac desktops and laptops. These are the powerhouses I need to get the job done. Yes, I occasionally surf the web on them but that’s not their primary function, as a designer, it is to keep a roof over my head.

Now I did make a decision like this a few years back which I regretted. I was a 4S user, I skipped the 5 and waited to see what the 5S would bring. When it was announced I wasn’t overly impressed. Touch ID was the standout feature but something I thought I could live without so I went out the next day and got the 5. But I was wrong, dead wrong. There is now no point in my life where I would ever have a mobile device without a fingerprint login. Luckily for me my provider took pity on me and gave me an outstanding offer to cut my 5 contract short when the 6 came out and that is the phone I have with me and still love today.

So my theory is, are we at peak smartphone? A few generations back they got to a point where they pretty much did everything that we wanted and every advancement beyond that was garnish unless you had special use cases for the development in the hardware.

So I’m going sim-free with my iPhone 6 and my Apple Watch. Am I wrong? Would you advise me against it or is it something that you have been considering when it comes to upgrade time?

Would love to hear your thoughts.
