OK, so we’re still going retro and this time it’s all about phones and I’m probably not alone in being a Nokia phone owner back in the day. Now I’m sure we’ve all had our fair share of Nokia’s in the past but the one that sticks on my mind is the 7110, in fact my first ever contract phone.
Now first of all I bought the 7110 under false pretence that I thought it was the phone from ‘The Matrix’ as it had the slide down front case but this was in fact the Nokia 8110 although once I got it in my hands I was far from disappointed.
As I mentioned the killer feature was the front cover. Get a call, flick the switch and it snapped down with a spring loaded mechanism at lightning speed to reveal the keypad which made you look as though you were someone from the future.
It also had another interesting control which was new back in the day as this was a scroll wheel that meant that you could navigate your contacts and options like a pro. It may seem a bit ‘gimmicky’ nowadays but in the late 90s it was a huge help.
But the thing that really sold it to me is that is the fact that it is was fully WAP enabled, remember that? The first real iteration of the internet on a phone. Fair enough there were not that many sites out there that handed themselves over to WAP but from those that did it felt like that’s the way things were going and at the time had me developing WAP versions of my own sites for the platform. Looking back though it does seem pretty lame.
However I did spend a few years with this as my daily driver and I was pretty happy with it.
How about your old school phones?
