Microsoft recently admitted during their earnings call that the netbook hit their peak in Quarter 2 last year. iPads and other tablet devices are indeed cannibalizing netbook sales. It only took 6 months, but Microsoft has finally learned something.
Before the rise of the netbook, the world was craving an intermediate device between a smartphone and a laptop. Tablets had been tried before, but with little success. People were simply not interested in a PC experience on a semi-mobile device.
Enter Microsoft with the netbook, showing their aged cliche thinking when it comes to consumer products. Instead of something different and innovative, they simply miniturized the laptop and rob it of it's processing power.
Then Apple comes along with the iPad, something different and unique. The iOS tablet has taken the world by storm and continued the process of changing computing as we know it.
Leave it to Microsoft to completely miss the mark and address the future with something from the past. Come on, Redmond; where's your A game?
