I'm a little obsessive about battery power. I live in constant fear of my devices dying on me. Up until now the only backup I’ve owned is a battery case for my iPhone 4S which I’ve been using with an adaptor from Poundland since my move to the iPhone 5. But I’ve got a few trips coming up and I wanted something a bit more reliable and a little less cumbersome. Also I wanted something that wouldn’t just charge my iPhone but all my devices so the search was on.
After a lot of searching, review reading and research I settled on the Anker Astro which is a 5600mAh portable battery that will charge a wide range of devices that can plug into a USB port which is basically everything, even iPads (will add a list of compatible devices at the end of this review).
The unit itself is really well made and solid. It has a port to plug in a micro USB cable so that you can charge it and a USB port where you plug in the device that you want to juice up. There is a battery level gauge on the front that tells you how much power you have remaining and the thing that I love most about it is the fact that it has a light next to the USB port so that you can see what you are doing when charging in the dark and it doubles up as a pretty sweet torch too.
Charging up your device couldn’t be simpler. Just plug it to in the USB socket and press the button on the front and it immediately starts to discharge. It’s bloody seamless.
So far on a single charge I have managed to charge my iPhone 5 twice and my iPad mini and there is still power to spare so if you are someone like me who gets a bit paranoid about getting disconnected then this is for you.
The Astro normally retails at £49.99 but I managed to get it at a reduced price on Amazon for £19.99. It’s currently showing as unavailable so maybe I got the last one, sorry, but they should have more stock in soon.
